Former Labour Party presidential candidate for the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, don repeat say if Nigerians elect am as president, he no go spend pass four years for office, as he believe say one term dey enough to deliver serious impact wey go change the country.
Obi drop this message for him official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, as he use example of world leaders wey serve short time but leave strong legacy to defend him stand. He mention people like Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy for America, and Nelson Mandela for South Africa, say all of dem no spend plenty time for power, yet the world still dey remember their name today. According to am, “Mandela serve only one term even when people dey beg am to stay. He do am because he believe say power suppose serve the people, no be to serve yourself.”
Obi talk say the wahala for Africa be say once many leaders enter power, dem no wan commot again, and dat one dey breed corruption and bad governance. He come talk say for him own leadership, long stay no be success, na results and transparency be the real thing. “I repeat am again without fear — if una elect me president, I no go stay pass four years. Na promise wey dey rooted inside my conscience,” he talk.
Obi come respond to people wey dey doubt am. He say e hear when some people dey talk say even if he swear for shrine, dem no go believe am. But Obi talk say Nigerians no dey trust politicians again because dem don too lie, and he understand why people dey doubt am. Obi come add say the 1999 Constitution already give four years for one term, with option to renew, and anybody wey believe say one term no fit make sense, fit also dey question the sense of the people wey write the constitution. He say his promise no be campaign sweet mouth. “I go use my four years deliver real results. I no dey come to make impression. I dey come to fulfil promise.”
He say within the four years, he go focus on reforming government, fighting insecurity, improving education and health care, reducing poverty, and supporting small businesses to grow. He also promise to change Nigeria from consumer economy to productive economy through agriculture, tech and manufacturing.
Obi say nothing dey spiritual or unrealistic about the plan. “All these things dey doable within four years if leader get vision and seriousness,” he talk.
